movie-swipe is a personal, non-commercial project run by Max Gorbikov. This page describes exactly what it stores, because the honest answer is short.
What the app stores about you
One thing: your reactions to films. Each one is a record of three values — which film, what you did, and the grade if you gave one:
{ film: "tt0068646", action: "seen", grade: 4 }
That is the entire contents of the app's database for your account. It holds no name, no email address, no IP address, no device information and no browsing history.
What Google stores, on the app's behalf
Signing in is handled by Firebase Authentication, a Google service. The app never sees or handles your password. Google provides it with your account identifier, your email address, and whether that address is verified — used only to confirm you are who you say you are, and to keep your reactions attached to your account.
Your email address lives in that Google service. It is not copied into the app's own database.
What your browser stores
Your filter settings — chosen genres, year range, rating range — are kept in your browser's local storage, separately for each signed-in account. They are sent to the server only as part of a request for the next batch of films, and are not recorded there.
Firebase Authentication also keeps your sign-in session in browser storage so you are not asked to sign in on every visit.
What the app does not do
- No analytics, no tracking pixels, no advertising, no tracking cookies.
- Nothing is sold, rented, shared, or transferred to anyone.
- No profile is built about you beyond the ranking model, which runs on your own reactions and does nothing but reorder the films you are shown.
- No user can see another user's data. Every request is scoped to the account proven by the sign-in token; there is no way to ask for someone else's list.
Other services your browser contacts
Loading the app makes requests to these, which will see your IP address as any web request does:
- Google (accounts.google.com, *.googleapis.com, www.gstatic.com) — signing in, and the authentication library itself.
- TMDB (image.tmdb.org) — poster images only. Film descriptions and trailer links were collected in advance and are served by this app, not fetched from TMDB as you browse.
- YouTube (www.youtube.com) — only if you tap “watch the trailer”. Nothing from YouTube is embedded in the page, so it is contacted only when you choose to go there.
Where the data lives
Google Cloud, region europe-west1 (Belgium). The database refuses all direct access: the only way in is through this app's own interface, after signing in.
Deleting your data
“Forget everything”, in the Library screen, permanently deletes your entire reaction history. It cannot be undone. You can export your history first from /api/export.
To also delete your sign-in record, email creativehonestpeople@gmail.com and it will be removed.
You can revoke this app's access to your Google account at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
Children
This app is not directed at children and is not intended for use by anyone under 16.
